World Bee Day
In December 2017, after years of solicitation and effort, the Slovenian Government and their Beekeeping Association persuaded the United Nations General Assembly to adopt a resolution declaring May 20 as World Bee Day. Every year on this day, the attention of the global public will be drawn to the importance of preserving bees and other pollinators.
"After three years of efforts both in terms of the official procedures at the UN and with regard to the intensive process of informing countries around the world, we have succeeded with this initiative. The proclamation of World Bee Day proves that the will to take action does exist.." —Dejan Židan, Deputy Prime Minister of Slovenia
Here in Milwaukee, BeeVangelists, a local non-profit, dedicated to spreading the buzz about bees, is having a day-long World Bee Day Party at Redeemer Church in Downtown Milwaukee. The local chapter of the United Nations Association will recognize the local effort with a proclamation.
This free event celebrates the bees with music, worship, art and information—and of course Bees! It is also a fundraiser to construct a Bee House Education Center in Milwaukee based on the Slovenian Bee Houses used throughout Eastern Europe. So please bring a generous contribution to find awareness and education resources to help bees and pollinators.
